The Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CCASA) expresses profound sadness over the failure of SCR24-001, the Child Sexual Abuse Accountability Amendment, to garner the two-thirds majority support needed to pass the state Senate, falling one vote shy with 23 votes in favor and 12 against. This resolution aimed to amend the Colorado constitution, allowing adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse to pursue civil claims against their abusers and the institutions that covered up the abuse.
Brie Franklin, Executive Director of CCASA, emphasizes the resolution’s intent to provide survivors with resources for healing and hold both abusers and negligent institutions accountable. Despite the setback, CCASA remains dedicated to advocating for legislative changes to ensure safety, justice, and healing for all survivors.
While today’s outcome denies justice, CCASA acknowledges the courage of survivors and extends gratitude to the bill sponsors, Senators Jessie Danielson and Rhonda Fields, and all who supported SCR24-001. CCASA reaffirms its commitment to addressing and preventing sexual violence through leadership, advocacy, and support services.
